Mission Bay High School sports update

As CIF competition nears in late October, several Mission Bay High teams are fighting hard even if the victories are not always following suit. Field hockey Mission Bay came into this week with a record of 2-8 for head coach Kris Auer.
According to Auer, Clara Sandoval continues to be the heartbeat of the team and a great role model for how to train.
“We can’t seem to win the close games,” Auer commented. “We are not prepared to do the little things it takes to win when the margin between victory and defeat is so tight. Regardless, I love my team. These girls are a joy to be around and are excellent representations of our school and our community.” Boys water polo
Mission Bay is 7-8 heading into action this week for head coach Lyndsay Sutterley. In action last week, Mission Bay fell to Point Loma High 18-12.
According to Sutterley, key members of the team have included Jackson Combs, Kyle Baker and Declan Lynch.
“This has been a challenging season filled with many very close games,” Sutterley noted. “The boys have improved tremendously and continue to grow every day. I have been very happy with their progress and commitment to the game. We are looking forward to great games this weekend at the varsity San Diego open.” Cross country Mission Bay, under head coach Barry Dancher, came into this week with the boys varsity, junior varsity and girls varsity teams all sporting 2-1 records, respectively. According to Dancher, the girls have been led to date by Gina Queck and Linda Giffing. Dancher noted that each is among the five fastest runners in the league. On the boys’ side, the Bucs are paced by TK Berhe, Trevor Reichenberg, Carter Taffe and Ben Delgado. Each is among the 15 fastest runners throughout the league. “We have a very young team that has improved dramatically during this cross country season,” Dancher stated. “We are looking forward to continued growth in our program, while being competitive during the rest of the season.” Boys beach volleyball Mission Bay swept Santa Fe Christian 5-0 with all five varsity teams winning their matches. The Bucs then pulled off a 3-2 victory against The Bishop’s School with wins by Ian Briski/Dusty Schroeder, Cody Armstrong/Ryan Derry, and Tetsoro Escudero/Gabe Esquivel.
With wins in the last two weeks, the Bucs finished tied for second in league with a 3-2 record.  Additionally, the pairing of Zander Caufield/Andy Knight finished third in the La Jolla/Coronado/MB individual pairs tournament. With their league finish the Bucs move on to the Division I playoffs starting on Oct 18.  “We ended up with our best league finish and record this year in just the fourth year of having a boys’ beach volleyball program,” coach Nikki Caufield said. “We will be playing Division I this year for the playoffs for the first time after having placed first and second in Division II in 2016 and 2017, respectively.  “We won’t learn who our first round opponent will be for a couple of days and are hopeful we can put together a strong playoff run this year. We also have a really good group of freshmen and sophomores this year that are showing a lot of promise for the future.” Girls volleyball
Mission Bay sported a 19-10 record going into the final week of the regular season.
The Bucs had a good week recently with wins over O’Farrell, Coronado and Castle Park, respectively. “We are hoping to make CIF and will find out on the 20th who we play in the first round,” coach Steve Upp said. “The team continues to improve and is looking to be at our peak for CIF.”
