Mission Bay football, boys water polo finish seasons

With winter sports off and running, a pair of Mission Bay High fall teams recently concluded their 2016 action.
On the gridiron, Buccaneer football under head coach Willie Matson went 4-6 on the season, falling short of its goal of another CIF appearance. “Not reaching this goal was a disappointment,” Matson commented.
Among the notable points of the season, the Bucs had a two-game win streak in September, leading to victories over Clairemont and Kearny, respectively.
Mission Bay suffered a three-game losing streak over a stretch of October, and then rallied to end the month with a 30-point victory over Scripps Ranch. The Bucs finished the regular season the first week of November with a 30-point loss to Christian.
According to Matson, the Bucs did have stellar campaigns from the likes of juniors Kenyon Sims (running back) and Kenny Russell (defensive back).
Despite those two individuals having a good 2016, Matson said there is work to do in order to get the program back to where it wants to be.
“We start the off-season with a renewed sense of purpose to make the playoffs and bring Mission Bay another CIF title,” Matson noted. Water polo In boys water polo play, Mission Bay under head coach John Knight finished second in league action.
In doing so, four Bucs made the all-league team, including: Andy Dorris and Parker St. Germaine (First-Team), and Alex Bauer and Brad Palmer (Second-Team).
Mission Bay reached the quarterfinals of the CIF Division III Tournament; something Knight noted was an accomplishment due to “hard work and a love of the game.
“Next year we are looking forward to improving our skills and competing at a higher level,” Knight added. Editor’s note: Look for updates of some of the Mission Bay High School varsity winter sports teams in the next Beach & Bay Press.
