Midway planners discuss community plan

In January, Midway Community Planning Group vetted a draft environmental impact report for its ongoing community plan update.
Group chair Cathy Kenton also cited Veterans Village of San Diego, which has a member on its board, for its community service and dedication. She noted VVSD has earned and deserves special recognition for the role it plays helping troubled veterans in the Midway community.
“I would love to see this group do something to support VVSD with an event or something, though I don’t know what that is,” said Kenton. “I think VVSD is an outstanding neighbor, and provides a lot of benefits.”
Kenton noted Vicki White, the city’s liaison with MCPG on its ongoing community plan update, will join the group in February to discuss a recently released draft environmental impact report on the plan update.
“The best way for us to approach (vetting) an EIR is through asking questions, rather than say, ‘we really like this, or don’t like that,’ ” Kenton said. “Staff has to respond to all questions.”
Regarding traffic impacts in the draft EIR of the Plan Update, Kenton commented, “We need to build more residential that doesn’t rely on cars the way we have relied on cars in the past.”
The chair pointed out the plan update needs to reflect the fact that the neighborhood is multi-modal and near a transit Center (Old Town).
“I’m not saying people aren’t going to have cars, just that we need to do something different here (with transportation),” she said. In other action:
MCPG’s Jan. 17 meeting witnessed a passing of the torch as Bruce Williams, Council District 2’s Midway representative, introduced his replacement, Ryan Purdy. Purdy has been responsible for the Smart Growth and Land Use Committee and special policy projects. He advises District 2 Councilmember Lorie Zapf on policy issues related to land use, regional planning, community plan updates, housing and development services.
