Matlak pleads guilty to threats against Torrey Pines High School

A graduate of Torrey Pines High School pleaded guilty July 10 to making a criminal threat when he aired a photo of an assault rifle on social media.
The preliminary hearing set for Friday, June 13 was canceled for Kevin Gregory Matlak, 21, of Point Loma.
Sentencing was set for August 10 in San Diego Superior Court. Matlak remains in jail, and the judge changed his $500,000 bail to no bail.
District Attorney spokeswoman Tanya Sierra said Thursday Matlak has agreed to a sentence of one year in jail and is expected to be placed on five years probation.
Sierra said the sentencing judge will consider releasing Matlak to a residential treatment facility after he serves 180 days.
Matlak was arrested May 30 at a Point Loma house after Matlak used his Instagram account and made some vague threats about disrupting the graduation ceremony along with a photo of an assault rifle.
“I hate all of you. I hope I die tonight,” said Matlak in the Instagram message in which he displayed an obscene gesture and holding an assault rifle.
As a precaution, Torrey Pines High School closed May 31 for the one day.
He had been charged with two other counts of making a criminal threat, but those are expected to be dismissed. An unrelated case of identity theft involving Matlak using a credit card of his mother’s boyfriend has been filed against him, but the case’s status could not be determined Thursday.
Matlak had been housed in the San Diego County Psychiatric Hospital on Rosecrans Street, but he was booked into the George Bailey Detention Facility on June 29 where he remains.
