Maserati thief ordered to pay $7,500 in restitution

A judge on Thursday ordered a car thief who stole an $80,000 2015 Maserati Ghibli from a La Jolla dealership to pay $7,564 to the dealership in costs. Deputy District Attorney Luis Mendez said the car was not damaged, but Marcus Lee Allen, 30, drove 900 miles on it before San Diego Police recovered it downtown on May 14. Allen took the car April 30 by grabbing the keys off a receptionist’s desk and driving off. Allen is serving a 3-year jail term and said nothing during the restitution hearing before San Diego Superior Court Judge Polly Shamoon. He is serving the sentence in county jail, and the sheriff’s department gave his projected release as Jan. 16, 2017. Mendez said the dealership sold the recovered Maserati at a loss, as it was no longer a new car. Allen isn’t believed to have a lot of assets, but officials may take a portion of any money that someone places on his jail books to pay the dealership. Allen entered the dealership at 7477 Girard Ave. and talked with several salesmen, spending about a half hour inside before stealing the keys. He gave them his nickname, which was released in news accounts; someone who knew his nickname noticed the new Maserati with temporary plates in his possession. Allen has been convicted of auto theft from dealerships in two other counties, once after taking a test drive. – Neal Putnam
