Mark Cantor’s ‘Giants of Jazz on Film’

Join the San Diego Center for Jewish Culture (SDCJC) for nights of jazz, blues, and commentary as they present Mark Cantor’s “Giants of Jazz on Film.” Explore Cantor’s accredited jazz film collection with film screenings beginning January through May.  It will run on Wednesdays (January 24, March 7, and May 9) at 7 p.m. Screenings will be held at the David and Dorothea Garfield Theater, located at 4126 Executive Drive.
With a vast archive of more than 12,000 films and clips, music maven Mark Cantor’s spectacular collection of jazz and blues performances is widely considered one of the world’s premier collections of American popular music on film. For over thirty-five years Mr. Cantor has presented a widely acclaimed series of public jazz-film clip presentations entitled “Celluloid Improvisations.”
In his not-to-be-missed programs, Cantor screens rare clips and shares detailed documentation and lively commentary. The 2018 Giants of Jazz on Film season opens with Cantor’s “Treasures from the Archive,” a compilation of jazz performances that cannot be found on YouTube or commercial DVDs. Join us as we sample the work of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Django Reinhardt, Billie Holiday and many more.
Following the season opener is “Bop” Wednesday on March 7. For this evening, bop is the thing, with film clips featuring some of the finest musicians in modern jazz. Featured on screen are Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, Lee Konitz, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, the Art Ensemble of Chicago and many more.
The 2018 Giants of Jazz on Film season will conclude May 9, with an evening featuring both great performers and the great songwriters as great jazz vocals and the Great American Songbook go hand-in-hand. Join us for screenings of Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett, Nina Simone, Mel Tormé, Sarah Vaughan and others performing the works of the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Rodgers and Hart and other masters of American song.
