A June 7 preliminary hearing has been set for a man suspected of ambushing a Harbor Police officer in front of their headquarters at 3380 North Harbor Drive.
Eric Jesus Medina, 29, was shot by Harbor Police officers after Medina allegedly pulled a firearm after requesting assistance outside their building on April 10. He has pleaded not guilty.
Medina drove a gray Honda Civic to the Harbor Police HQs and used a callbox, saying he needed to speak to an officer. When a dispatcher asked him what does he need, video surveillance cameras show that Medina went back to his car without answering. An officer came outside but saw him holding a handgun and pointing it at him, according to a statement by San Diego Police.
The officer fired, then retreated behind a pillar, and a sergeant and a lieutenant who came outside also fired. Medina dropped the weapon and was taken to a hospital.
Medina pleaded not guilty while in the hospital to one count of assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.
Medina has since been released into the central jail and appeared in San Diego Superior Court on April 22, when a judge set the June 7 preliminary hearing. He’s being held without bail.
The investigation is continuing as to the motive behind the incident. San Diego Police will review the case. The prosecutor could not be reached for comment.
