Man surrenders in attack that left LJ resident paralyzed

A man suspected of attacking a La Jolla retiree in a fit of road rage in New Orleans last month surrendered to authorities the night of Nov. 1.  New Orleans police confirmed that 30-year-old Christopher Smith turned himself in for the attack that paralyzed 64-year-old Doug David, who was on vacation in New Orleans. Smith was booked on charges of second-degree battery. On Oct. 15, David was in a crosswalk near the French Quarter when a car ran a stop sign and almost struck him. David reportedly threw a can at the car, prompting the driver to get out and punch him, paralyzing David from the neck down. One witness described what she saw to a New Orleans television station. “He immediately stopped, jumped out, and I was like, ‘that guy is about to hit him.’ I knew he was going to hit him. And he hit him, like one time, jumped back in his car, left. But I watched the guy fall.” Smith’s bail was set at $35,000. Family and friends raised $20,000 to fly David back to Southern California. He is currently continuing his recovery in Rancho Cucamonga. – 10 News
