A man who stabbed a passenger on a Greyhound bus in the University City area has pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon aboard a mass transit vehicle.

Gilbert Louis Dominguez, 36, also pleaded guilty to a felony assault of another inmate in jail in a separate incident on Oct. 22. Dominguez faces a sentencing range from 13 to 21 years in prison, according to court records. San Diego Superior Court Judge Polly Shamoon set sentencing for Nov. 12.

The incident aboard the Greyhound occurred July 11, 2018, at 12:30 p.m. as the bus was traveling on Interstate 5 in University City near the Genesee exit. The bus victim, Martin Hernandez, 27, was cut behind the ear with the knife slicing his throat. He was also stabbed in both arms and in the back.

The prosecutor said Dominguez did not know Hernandez. An attempted murder charge was dropped after the guilty pleas. The bus driver kicked both men off the bus and called 911. Hernandez was taken to a hospital. 

Dominguez was convicted of carjacking in Los Angeles Superior Court in 2001 and served a prison sentence for that, records say. His prior record does play a factor in the 21-year maximum sentence. 

Dominguez remains in jail without bail.
