
Having to survive double-elimination rounds, both La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School and The Bishop’s School battled but were knocked out of the CIF Division IV baseball playoffs last week.
LJCD opened play with a shutout of Calvary Christian last Tuesday, 13-0.
“We had a perfect game through 6.2 innings until some rookie asked, ‘Have they had a base runner yet?'” LJCD Head Coach John Edman noted.
Calvary promptly got two base hits. Greg Wisenberg (four innings) and Zack Campbell (three) shared the shutout on the mound, while Mike McKenna went 3-for-3 with five RBIs to lead the Torreys.
On Wednesday, LJCD lost to the No. 1 seed, Santa Fe Christian, 11-4, for the first loss. Zack Kusnir (6-4 on the year) took the loss on the mound. At the plate, Kusnir went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Two days later, LJCD was eliminated with a 14-5 loss to Marian Catholic.
The Torreys ended the season with a 16-12-1 record and a share of the Coastal South title.
“It was a great season for our boys,” Edman added.
At The Bishop’s School, the Knights had their season come to an end at the hands of Christian.
Bishop’s (16-11) opened CIF play with a 7-0 shutout of Imperial. The Knights then lost to Christian 7-2, having to avoid another loss or be eliminated.
Bishop’s bounced back with a 3-2 win over Horizon but then lost its second contest to Christian by a score of 6-4.
University City (UC) High saw its great season end at 24-7 last week.
In Division III play, the Centurions fell to Cathedral 7-1 before rebounding to top El Capitan 7-5. UC was then eliminated with its 3-1 loss to the Saints.
On the softball diamond, The Bishop’s School fell to Christian 4-2 to end its season last week at 12-8.
The Lady Knights had opened CIF play with a 3-2 victory over Santa Fe Christian.
La Jolla Country Day School went 11-9 on the season and opened CIF play with a 2-1 win over Coronado.
The Lady Torreys were led once again by senior Alexandra Berenter, who struck out nine and made several good defensive plays. Berenter hit the game-tying home run, while fellow senior Rachel Kanter had the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the seventh.
LJCD was eliminated from the postseason with a 5-2 loss to Mt. Empire.
In Division III play, University City ended its campaign at 15-6 with a 13-0 loss to Ramona.
The Lady Cents had topped OLP 8-0 to open play.
