The La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club (LJBTC) hosted the 122nd Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship March 3-6. Participants at the prestigious tennis tournament included many of the nation’s top college players as well as several locals. La Jolla Country Day School was represented by seniors Warren Wood and Daniel Faierman. The duo that also plays on the high school team made it to the round of 32 before losing to the team of Rikus de Villiers and Remi Boutillier 6-3, 6-2. “We were serving and returning really solidly and we were seeing the ball really well,” said Faierman, who will be playing a Yale next year. Wood will be attending and playing at Claremont Mckenna College in the fall. The team that defeated Wood and Faierman made it all the way to the finals. La Jolla High School was also represented in the tourney by sophomores Ryan Rosen and Addison Appleby. The pair won against the sixth-seeded team in the consolation bracket on Friday but forfeited a match on Saturday because they were both playing in a large junior tournament in Long Beach. “It’s fantastic playing all these guys that are going to D-I schools,” Rosen said. “You get to be the little kid that’s beating up on them.” Appleby said he and Rosen have good chemistry on the court. “We’re really good friends and play on the [high school] team together, so it’s good,” he said. The LJBTC first hosted the Pacific Coast Men’s Doubles Championship in 1942. The annual tournament began at the Hotel Del Monte in Monterey in 1890, making it the fifth oldest in the world and a precursor to the Davis Cup. Several tennis greats have participated over the years, including Arthur Ashe, John McEnroe and Pancho Segura. The winner of this year’s tournament was the top-seeded team of Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher, who defeated Boutillier and de Villiers 6-1, 6-2. Several other La Jollans also participated in the event. Local Max Dutreix, playing with Max Jiganti, reached the quarterfinals of the consolation bracket and La Jolla resident Gregory Hirshman got to the fourth round. Vincent Lampe and William Mullen made it to the second and third rounds of the consolation bracket.
