On June 18, local jazz icon Chuck Perrin celebrates his 70th birthday with a rare performance at his venue, Dizzy’s. Backed by special guests, including bassist Justin Grinnell, vibraphonist Ian Harland and trombonist Matt Hall, Perrin will look back at a life immersed in music since the early 1960s. Birthday cake and a present are promised for all attendees, but the real gift is what Perrin has given to San Diego music fans with his venue over the years and his promotion of San Diego’s jazz artists in general. This is a wonderful opportunity to say “thanks” to him for all the music. Banks is an incredible bassist, with a terrific slapping style that adds a percussive edge to his playing, perfect for the dance-floor-filling soul and R&B songs his quintet performs. TYGHTSHIP is a lot of fun to listen to, but this is music that will make you want to dance. TYGHTSHIP: Sunday, June 19, at Humphrey’s Backstage Live, 2241 Shelter Island Drive. 8 p.m. 21 and up. humphreysbackstagelive.com Blues / indie rock quartet, Broken Stems performs aboard the Bahia Belle on June 24. The band excels at anthemic radio-friendly tunes, such as recent single “Maybe,” equal parts melody and sonic dynamics. For events such as this, the band mixes in choice covers such as Hendrix standard, “Hey Joe,” giving it their own flavor, but Broken Stems’ own material is strong enough to hold your attention, topped by harmonies and solid arrangements. Broken Stems: Friday, June 24, at the Bahia Resort, 998 West Mission Bay Drive. 9:30 p.m. 21 and up. www.bahiabelle.com Rock quartet Daddy Issues holds a CD release show at the 710 Beach Club on June 24. Led by singer Angela Alvarez, with ace bassist Julia Whelpton, the band’s sound is hard to pigeon hole, with introspective mid-tempo numbers alongside harder rock numbers. Topped by Alvarez’s soaring vocals, the closest equivalent would be prime-era Pat Benatar. If you like classic sounding rock ’n’ roll, this one’s for you. Daddy Issues: Friday, June 24, at the 710 Beach Club, 710 Garnet Ave. 9 p.m. 21 and up. www.710bc.com. Anyone who enjoys acoustic Latin music will want to check out Cantua, appearing at the Kona Kai Resort on June 25. Performing a special brunch set starting at 11 a.m., the duo has a sound similar to the Gypsy Kings, with virtuoso guitar performances from brothers Pablo and Esteban Cantua, playing a mix of standards and tasty originals. The music takes place on the resorts outdoor patio, overlooking a private beach and marina, making this the perfect way to kick off a summer Sunday in San Diego.

The band is one of two touring acts that share the Venom name, with this version having two-thirds of original members in guitarist Jeff (Mantas) Dunn and drummer Anthony (Abaddon) Bray. Formed in 1979, the band still plays thrash metal with manic energy that continues to draw a rabid fan base. Venom never achieved any sort of mainstream success, but their cult band status is assured.
