The La Mesa Daughters of the American Revolution Letitia Coxe Shelby Chapter is supporting the troops by wearing R.E.D on Fridays. R.E.D. is the acronym for “Remember Everyone Deployed” R.E.D.
Friday was created to remind people of our heroes overseas and show that we are thinking of them. People across the country wear red every Friday to serve as a reminder and spread the message of how important it is that we keep our troops in our thoughts.
During WWII red became a symbol of patriotism and an expression of strength and confidence, especially given Hitler’s reported hatred of red lipstick. The Elizabeth Arden Company was approached by the Marine Corp to produce a lipstick for women Marines. The resultant color “Montezuma Red” matched the hat cord, scarf and sleeve of chevrons on their uniforms. The civilian version was “Victory Red”. It was patriotism you could carry in your purse as IIlise S. Carter wrote in her book, The Red Menace: How Lipstick Changed the Face of American History.
The Letitia Coxe Shelby DAR Chapter meets once a month on Friday afternoon.
