LJSA endorses Challenged Athletes Foundation at July meeting

In July, the La Jolla Shores Association (LJSA) endorsed the Challenged Athletes Foundation’s (CAF) annual triathlon, and heard about upcoming infrastructure improvements in the neighborhood.

Katie Huburt of CAF, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit supporting and encouraging the physically challenged to pursue active lifestyles and competitive sports, talked to community planners about the 26th annual Aspen Medical Products San Diego Triathlon Challenge.

The event will be held at La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Cove this year on Sunday, Oct. 20. It is a 1-mile swim, 44-mile bike ride and 10-mile run.

“We’re a leader in providing people with physical challenges the opportunity to get back into sports,” said Huburt. “We gave more than 2,600 grants to 103 different sports last year.”

Hubert said the San Diego Million Dollar Challenge fundraising bike ride from the San Francisco Bay Area to San Diego from Oct. 12-18 raises $1 million for challenged athletes and adaptive sports. The ride ends at La Jolla Shores.

“It’s about families, picnicking and surf clinics put on by the Seau Foundation that Friday,” said Huburt. “There’s a big celebration at the end welcoming riders back home.”

LJSA board unanimously supported the triathlon.

District 1 staffer Mauricio Medina said funds will be in next year’s city budget to repave La Jolla Parkway. He added there is also $1.3 million in next year’s budget for brush removal in that area.

“It’s a fire hazard in those weeds,” said LJSA chair Janie Emerson. “Somebody could just throw a cigarette and there are homes behind it.”

Medina reiterated that the Get It Done app on the city’s website remains the best way for people to report problems and infrastructure issues that need to be addressed.

In other matters:

Mary Coakley Munk, wife of the famed late Scripps oceanographer Walter Munk, said two events are being planned to celebrate what would have been his 102nd birthday in October: a symposium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography and a paddle-out for Walter set for Saturday, Oct. 19. Munk died Feb. 8 this year at his home in La Jolla Shores.
