LJCD gridders tackle Mt. Empire, 36-19

The La Jolla Country Day football team kicked off the CIF playoffs with a victory last weekend, sending the Torreys into action Friday night.
LJCD (7-3) defeated Mt. Empire 36-19 last weekend. The win gives the Torreys seven consecutive years with at least one win in the CIF football playoffs.
QB Derek Hatfield paced the offense, but he did so on the ground, not through the air. Hatfield carried the ball 33 times for 131 yards. (both season team highs) and three TDs. Tailback Montell Allen added 93 yards on 14 carries.
In the air, Eastin Reaume had the biggest reception of the night, hauling in a 37-yard pass from backup QB Ruben Pena.
LJCD’s defense was led by linebacker John Hansbrough, who blocked a Mt. Empire punt and picked off a pass.
Connor Gerhart and Shonta Chiloux also made interceptions, while Anthony Barkett recovered another fumble. Kicker Travis Golia hit on 3-of-3 field goal tries and went 3-for-4 on PATs.
LJCD will travel to Francis Parker on Friday, Nov. 23 for a 7 p.m. contest.
Elsewhere, both La Jolla High School and The Bishop’s School are in action this weekend after first-round byes.
On Friday night, La Jolla takes on Coronado at home at 7:30 p.m. in a Division IV quarterfinal.
On Saturday night, Bishop’s will play host (La Jolla High) to Vincent Memorial in a 7:30 p.m. Division V contest. Vincent Memorial advanced last weekend with a 47-28 victory over Tri-City Christian.
Bishop’s carries a perfect 9-0 record into the match-up.
