While the high school girls basketball season may be months away, that has not stopped the La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School girls team from keeping busy on the hardwood this summer.
The Lady Torreys participated last week in The San Diego Classic, the nation’s largest high school girls basketball tourney. The event, which began in 1987, hosted more than 300 teams this year and visited different multi-court sites throughout San Diego County.
Head coach Terri Bamford’s LJCD squad went a very respectful 5-1 in the 3A Division.
“We are a very young team and I am pleased with how they are developing,” Bamford commented. “We had wins over some strong teams ” Long Beach Poly, Colony, Etiwanda, Esperonza, and defeated Mater Dei (San Diego) in the second-place pool championship. The tournament experience gives this young team the confidence going into next season that they can compete with the top teams in the state. The experience also exposes areas in which we need to improve on for next season.”
The LJCD roster consisted of Ariana Elegado (class of 2010), Kaylah Miller (2011), Chemayne Shipley (2010), Alexis Samuels (2010), Malina Hood (2012), Sam Staszak (2012), Maya Hood (2012), Shayla Dinwiddie (2011) and Gillian Howard (2011).
LJCD, which graduated six seniors from its team last winter, finished this past high school season as the runners-up in state Division IV.
