Both the La Jolla Country Day (LJCD) School boys and girls soccer teams were in action over the last week in efforts to secure wins. On the girls side, LJCD (3-3-2, 0-1) dropped a 3-1 decision to Canyon Crest Academy last week. After scoring first on a rebound goal by Ariana Paradise following a great shot by Kelly Mordente from 25 yards out, the Lady Torreys gave up two goals in the first half.  According to LJCD head coach Dave Jenkins, center midfielders Aleena Young and Ana Cruz played strong games but just couldn’t generate enough attacking opportunities to threaten Canyon Crest. In a 0-0 tie with San Marcos, LJCD was already missing two players. During the game, the Lady Torreys suffered another blow, losing Allie Hieb who was injured in the first half.  Freshman Katherine Klicpera battled a bout of food poisoning and played as much as she could, while Megan Narwold played with a strained hip flexor and Tara Roudi, fighting a stomach virus, gave it her best effort.  “With our player situation changing minute to minute, it provided players an opportunity for field leadership and to play some new positions,” Jenkins said. “Captain Aleena Young and Ana Cruz stepped up their games on both sides of the ball and really took charge of the midfield. Erika Shepard moved into the sweeper position and played flawlessly. Miquela Fiori started at outside mid and moved to outside defender for the second half and, much like Erika, played flawlessly. Kelly Mordente also had a very solid game as an outside defender and put in some solid minutes as forward. It was a tough afternoon for the girls.  They reacted well to adversity and really showed some strong team and individual character.” On the boys side, LJCD dropped a 3-1 decision to Canyon Crest. Down 2-0, Alex Fleischhacker’s penalty kick cut the lead to one, but CCA added a final goal to ice the game. According to LJCD head coach Jerry Fleischhacker, the Torreys picked up intensity in the second half, especially with the play of Danny Rogers, Philip Poyhonen and Max Ferre, and also created numerous scoring opportunities.  “Unfortunately, we did not manage to convert any of them,” Jerry Fleischhacker said. “Yet, the strong second-half effort should set the stage for next week’s (this week) key contests against Bishop’s and Francis Parker.”
