The La Jolla chapter of Soroptimist International is accepting applications from young women, ages 14 to 17, who volunteer within the community and make positive improvements for the Violet Richardson Award program.
“These are young women and they are making an impact on the community in a lot of great ways, and we want to recognize their service and support their endeavors,” said Lisa Lindgren, a La Jolla club volunteer. “We’d like to help them so they can continue to do community service in the future.”
Named after the president of the first Soroptimist club in 1921, the Violet Richardson Award is first presented to an individual within La Jolla’s club. That finalist then moves on to be judged against other volunteers in the district, which includes clubs from Mission Bay, downtown, and other communities within San Diego.
The winner from the district moves on to compete against the entire region, which spans as far north as Los Angeles, down to the U.S.-Mexico border, into Imperial County and Yuma, Ariz.
The first-place awards vary. La Jolla’s club presents its winner with $500 and an additional $250 to her volunteer organization.
Applications are due no later than Dec. 1, and are available by contacting Sharilyn, (858) 457-3834. Winners will be announced in January.
The Soroptimist International of La Jolla is part of the Soroptimist International of the Americas, which was founded in 1947. With close to 120 countries and 100,000 Soroptimists, individual clubs strive to improve the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world.
