With another collegiate spring sports season just about in the books, it is time to take a look back at some recent performances by local graduates.
Roxy Lambert (La Jolla High), who just completed her rookie season on the University of Redlands Bulldogs championship softball team, was named to the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) All-Conference Second Team.
Lambert found her niche as a designated hitter in her rookie season, starting in almost all games in the six spot hitting for the starting pitchers. She hit .323 in league play, leading the team with nine doubles, and she had two home runs with a slugging percentage of .508 on the season.
Lisa Dodd (University City High) had a hit and a run to help lead UCLA to a 4-1 win over Alabama last Saturday, June 3, in the Women’s Softball College World Series.
UCLA went on to defeat Texas in its next game in the elimination round.
Katie Markstein (The Bishop’s School) was among those who captured top honors for athletics at Bentley College’s (Mass.) recent senior recognition dinner.
Markstein was named the Outstanding Female Senior Athlete. She wrapped up a distinguished career for the Bentley volleyball team last fall by earning team MVP accolades and Libero of the Year honors in the Northeast-10 Conference.
She broke the school record for digs in a season for the third straight year, amassing a conference-best 716, and finished her four-year career with 2,289, a total only two players in Division II had amassed prior to the start of the 2005 season.
Brandon Davis (The Bishop’s School) and the Georgetown University men’s baseball team recently closed out the season with an 8-7 win over Pitt.
Davis, a catcher, delivered a game-tying double to left-center in the victory for the Hoyas, who finished with a record of 24-32. The team’s 10 wins in league play (The Big East) were the most since the 1986 squad won 12 games.
Andrew Campbell (The Bishop’s School), a senior at Georgetown University, was named the U.S. Olympic Committee male sailing athlete of the year.
Campbell won the 2005-06 ICSA/Vanguard Singlehanded National American Championships, becoming the event’s first three-time winner. He led the Hoyas to an Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association No. 1 ranking for the season. Campbell’s achievements were published in the Feb. 6, 2006, issue of Sports Illustrated.
