LJ, Bishop’s girls water polo teams make splash

With a new season of scholastic girls water polo action surfacing, both the La Jolla High and Bishop’s School teams have scored several wins to date. In action last week, La Jolla rolled to an 18-6 win over Great Oaks. Kate Woods led the way with six goals, while Tori Loomis (four goals), Bridgette Souza (three goals), Christina Kirby and Victoria Frager (two goals each) and Greta Gettelfinger (goal) also scored for the Lady Vikings. In an 11-9 overtime loss to Coronado, Woods paced La Jolla with five goals, while Souza had the tie-making goal and one other for the Lady Vikings. Meagan Moreland and Gettelfinger each had one goal for La Jolla. In a 9-4 win over Poway, Woods led La Jolla with four goals, with Ariel Arcidiacono adding a pair. “La Jolla seniors Kelsey Ryan, Bridgett Souza and Kate Woods stepped up their game this past week at a time when we most needed it against Coronado and Poway,” La Jolla High head coach Dante Laghetto said. “Kelsey Ryan (goalkeeper) kept us in the game against Coronado the entire game,” Laghetto continued. “She made some very important blocks at times that we really needed. Bridgette Souza came off of the bench, as always, fighting and bringing the fire back in the game to score the last goal to tie the game with 4.5 seconds in the game against back-to-back CIF Division II Coronado. Kate Woods had a terrific game, if not one of her best performances ever. Scoring most of the La Jolla goals this week (five against Coronado and four against Poway), she started strong this season and will to try to take the Vikings to their first championship game in history.” Elsewhere, The Bishop’s School comes into the season following a 26-6 record last winter, finishing second in both the Western League and CIF Division II. The Lady Knights have six seniors on this season’s team, led by first and second team All-Western League and All-CIF performers Sammi Peck and Sarah Presant. According to head coach Doug Peabody, senior Kirsten Siegel is stepping up and doing a nice job of putting points on the board as she leads the Lady Knights early in the season with 14 goals in the first five games. Fellow seniors Melanie Boehrig, Julia Hill and defensive stopper Katy Feaver anchor the squad. Peabody noted that underclassmen who will have a major impact include sophomore standout goalkeeper Gabby Stone; juniors Kristen Casey and Claryann Oloffson-Loo; with the depth of sophomore Erin Pannek; and freshman Jessica Webster contributing. “We are hoping to improve each and every day of practice and through our tough schedule of games so as to peak in time for the playoffs,” Peabody stated. Bishop’s went 3-2 in the recent Villa Park Tournament with wins over Marina of Long Beach (17-1), El Toro (10-9 OT) and Montbello (11-10).
