A La Jolla artist may be found liable for a fine of $2,500 a day, to a total of $250,000, if he doesn’t remove a sculpture in his front yard – one that’s said to fit in beautifully with the neighborhood’s beachside environment. Nasser Pirasteh, whose home is near the corner of Nautilus Street and Aranda Avenue, was unaware he needed permits for the 10- by 10-foot sculpture, which sports a nautical theme and is supposed to represent the passage of time. But the city declared that the piece is a structure, which is subject to a series of permitting requirements Pirasteh must meet. According to the municipal code, the piece must not occupy a space between the front sidewalk (which is public property) and the house; rather, it must sit entirely within Pirasteh’s front yard. Pirasteh has until May 7 to remove the piece, at which time the fine will be imposed if he doesn’t comply.
