The Pacific Beach Summer Concerts series returns for the season on July 21 at Kate Sessions Park. Taking place over four consecutive weekends through Aug. 11, the initial concert will feature music from Slower. Led by mohawked frontman Dominic Moscatello, the band is versatile, with a set list full of crowd pleasers ranging from AC/DC to Bruno Mars. As enjoyable as Slower is sure to be, it’s hard to beat the incredible view of the city from this concert location, the mixture of music and scenery easily making the summer concerts series one of the most popular in San Diego. Funds raised will go to the Voices of Our City Choir, a nonprofit that works with the area’s homeless, through music. The evening will pay tribute to female rockers through the ages, with performances from Roni Lee, best known for co-writing The Runaways classic “I Wanna Be Where The Boys Are,” as well as from Rhythm Rose Turner, Shamini Jain, Jules Whelpton, Michele Whitlow, Francesca Valle, Bahar Shahidi, Laura Vreeland, Lee Eddy, Juliet Hawkins, and Colette Lopiccolo. This promises to be a great night of rock ‘n’ roll with the bonus of helping out a worthy organization.
Rock Goddess Benefit Night: Saturday, July 13 at Brick by Brick, 1130 Buenos Ave. 8:30 p.m. 21 and up. $15. brickbybrick.com. Indie combo Triton Eye performs at the 710 Beach Club on July 13. The seven-piece band, complete with a three-piece horn section, is hard to pigeonhole, playing everything from classic rock to modern dance hits. While their cover tunes are solid, where they really excel is on their growing number of worthy originals. Songs such as the angsty soul tune “Leave This to Me” and powerpop gem “Text Me Back,” showcase the band’s range, with the horns adding superb dynamics. The band keeps the energy level high in order to keep the dance floor packed, playing a mix of surf classics, such as The Chantays “Pipeline,” dance favorites like Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally” and 1960s rockers including the Doors’ “Light My Fire.” Surf Birdz: Wednesday, July 17, at Humphrey’s Backstage Live, 2241 Shelter Island Drive, Shelter Island. 7 p.m. $5. humphreysbackstagelive.com. Two of San Diego’s leading jazz talents, singer Allison Adams Tucker and pianist Danny Green, join forces on July 21 for a show at Dizzys aptly titled, Duets. Tucker has a wonderfully evocative voice and is perfectly at home with an international repertoire that will include both modern era pop as well as French chansons, Brazilian sambas, Mexican boleros and Japanese folksongs. Meanwhile Green is one of the finest pianists in the city, with a fluid, lyrical style that can be breathtaking. Jazz fans shouldn’t pass up this inspired pairing of musicians. Allison Adams Tucker and Danny Green: Sunday, July 21, at Dizzy’s at Arias Hall, 1717 Morena Blvd. 7 p.m. $20. dizzysjazz.com. Founded in 2001, The San Diego Troubadour is one of our city’s treasures. The monthly newspaper specializes in folk, Americana, blues, world music and jazz, championing San Diego’s most talented musicians as well the best in music from around the world. On July 24, Tio Leo’s will host an “appreciation” concert to both raise funds and show the paper’s editor, Elizabeth Abbot, just how much it means to the local community. On hand will be a who’s who of local music, all from musicians who have been featured on the Troubadour’s cover. On hand will be Plow, The Baja Bugs and Leonard Patton, with a special cover band, featuring Sue Palmer, Steve Wilcox, Mercedes Moore, Ron Bocian, and Marcia Claire performing songs from the American songbook. This is a wonderful way to both celebrate and help one of the area’s most vital music resources.
