It’s summertime in La Jolla and through September, there will be no better way to spend an afternoon than at one of the annual Concerts by the Sea. Upcoming shows include Cajun blues combo, Theo & The Zydeco Patrol (Aug, 9) and Latin jazz group, Incendio (Aug. 16), but one of the season’s highlights will be Americana /country band, Lightning Train, performing on Aug. 2.
Led by guitarist Alex Watts, Lightning Train excels at a wide range of classic tunes by the likes of Ray Price, Johnny Cash and Gram Parson, but also includes more modern fare, such as “Texas Sun” originally by local favorites The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash. Highlighted by Dave Berzansky’s slide guitar, the quartet is terrific, perfect for swing dancing or just enjoying as a soundtrack to the concert sites spectacular ocean view. Lightning Train: Sunday, Aug. 2 at La Jolla Concerts by the Sea, Scripps Park at La Jolla Cove. 2 p.m. All ages. Free. www.ljconcertsbythesea.org.
