La Jolla has some old-school beaches
Whether you are for or against drinking alcohol on Pacific and Mission beaches, the primary concern is safety now.
Too many people are packed into these small spans of beach every weekend.
It is time to either:
a) ban alcohol on these two beaches, or
b) open up alcohol drinking on all San Diego County beaches in an effort to disperse people across the county.
As one 25-year-old so aptly said on the Pacific Beach/Mission Beach boardwalk three hours after the riot, “La Jolla beaches are old school, dude. If you are 25, you gotta come here (Pacific Beach/Mission Beach); you’ll definitely get hooked up!”
Let’s spread people out across all of our county’s beautiful beaches again! Either allow or ban alcohol everywhere. It’s time to make a decision!

Get it gone
Please do everything in your power to get alcohol off the beach. I live at the beach in PB, and as a policy I will not take visitors, nor my 3- and 5-year-old kids to the beach on weekend afternoons because of the drinking, the problems it creates, and the people it attracts.
The recent incident and national news coverage are an embarrassment to our city and community. Please get alcohol off the beach, and let me know what I can do to help fight this problem.
Chris Loughridge, Sail Bay
When will it change?
Another holiday and trouble on the beach, and again, the police are unable to keep people safe and enforce the laws. When will it change? When will the alcohol (and drugs) be off limits on the beach so children and families can all enjoy the beach, too?
If you choose to go to the beach is it impossible to go without drinking for a day?
When will the police admit it is impossible to keep us safe while drinking alcohol on the beach is legal?
Candy Hogan, Pacific Beach
