It is understandable that the fishermen, swimmers and snorkelers object to the harbor seals in and around the Children’s Pool and the Cove in La Jolla. The seals snatch the bait off the hooks and the swimmers don’t know how to share the water. While some groups are dedicated to protect the seals, other groups are determined to chase them away. It seems that the seals have more enemies than friends. Suppose that someday we could actually talk with the seals. We would say to them that they ruin the fishing, pollute the beaches and dominate the waters. Would they fold their flippers, bow their heads and say, “Forgive us. We had no idea. We thought you built that protecting wall to shield the mothers with newborn pups. We will abandon our home and leave the beaches?” Or is it more likely that the huge master seal would rise and roar at us humans in this fashion? “We have been here for millions of years and intend to stay for millions more. Our genetic makeup dictates out return to this area. Don’t you realize that you Homo sapiens are on your way out? We only wait for you to destry yourselves. Then peace will come again to our planet.” Having said that, the huge pinniped might clap its flippers and do a perfect swan dive from his rock into the ocean. — Patricia Weber lives in La Jolla.
