Re: “Residents outline concerns about proposed Bird Rock farmers market” (March 3, Page 1). I strongly support the proposed Bird Rock Farmers Market. I firmly believe that the community can and will support both the existing Sunday morning market and this second neighborhood venture. The Bird Rock Farmers Market promises to be a true neighborhood gathering, with shoppers coming by foot, wagon and bikes for fresh produce and other farm-fresh items. Certainly traffic is always a concern, but the very layout of this market and the limited accessibility for vehicular traffic outside of the surrounding area seems to speak somewhat to that concern. The experience and success of the market manager should not be downplayed. She runs several thriving neighborhood markets in San Diego and has strong ties to the local farming community. I think her organization is more qualified and prepared than any to successfully handle the complications of running such an endeavor and satisfy community concerns. With the delivery of thousands of pink slips to San Diego school teachers this week, local schools need help and additional funds to continue to thrive. What better way to benefit Bird Rock Elementary and Muirlands Middle schools than bringing our families to a local market that is comprised of San Diego’s working farmers? That alone is a lesson unto itself. — Pamela Kennedy lives in La Jolla.
