Later start times for Mission Bay High School next fall

Due to San Diego Unified School District instituting healthy start times districtwide in 2020-21, Mission Bay High School’s day will begin at 8:45 a.m. and about 3:45 p.m. when school resumes this fall.
Based on scientific research on teens and sleep, which shows insufficient sleep by teens leads to both poor mental and physical health and behavioral problems in lower grades, SDUSD approved a resolution to implement later school start times. That was done to help increase student attendance and improve student academic performance and health.
Healthy start times came out of California Senate Bill 328, which prohibits state high schools from starting classes before 8:30 a.m., and middle schools from starting before 8 a.m.
“San Diego Unified is proud to lead the way on this important initiative, approved with the health and wellness of students in mind,” said MBHS principal Ernest S. Remillard in a letter. “We understand this move will require new routines for families. Some employers have already expressed support for this move, and understand that flexibility will be in order while we all adjust to new schedules.”
In his letter, Remillard stressed the need, even though the new school year is months away, for families to start to prepare themselves by coordinating carpools and reconsidering both before- and after-school arraignments for picking up their children.
