Local scholastic girls basketball teams have their eyes on league play now that the holidays are done.
At La Jolla High, the Lady Vikings carried a 7-3 record into play following a third-place finish at the Crawford Christmas Tournament. The Lady Vikings secured their spot with a 48-29 win over Mission Hills, led by the efforts of Olivia Waldon (19 points) and Alyssa Wilson (18 points).
Key players to date have included Waldon (All-Tournament Team at Crawford), Wilson, Stephanie Guillou and Rachel Pedowitz.
“We weren’t sure exactly what to expect at the start of the year, since we graduated four starters from last year’s team, but the girls have responded well to their new roles and really stepped up their games,” La Jolla High head coach Ty Eveleth said. “We are a lot farther along than most people expected us to be at this point of the season. If we continue to improve at the same rate all season long, we are going to turn some heads come playoff time.”
At The Bishop’s School, the Lady Knights rolled recently in the Knights Holiday Classic, culminating with a 69-30 win over Nevada Virgin Valley. With the win, Bishop’s ran its season’s record to 10-0.
Kathleen Roerhkasse led the way in the victory with 23 points, with Michelle Brunker and Bianca Padilla adding 14 and 12, respectively.
In earlier games, Bishop’s topped Sweetwater 86-30 behind 30 points from Brunker. The Lady Knights also beat Mar Vista 72-28, behind 23 points from Roehrkasse and 17 from Padilla. In a 62-20 win over Canada Strathscona, Roehrkasse again led the way with 27 points.
University City High concluded play in the Coronado Round Robin Tournament with a 61-47 victory over Mar Vista recently.
Jamie Vermillion led the Lady Centurions with 10 points.
UC then opened play last week in the Cougar Classic. The Lady Centurions dropped a 53-46 decision to Rancho Buena Vista. Delea Pursel led UC with 15 points.
