Several local scholastic boys and girls lacrosse teams hope to stick to a winning plan this season.
At The Bishop’s School, head coach Steve Sepeta and the Knights come off of a 10-10 season last year.
Key players this season look to include Will Geier, Mike Jensen, Scott Bollert, Nick Haeling, Dillon DuPont and Conner Thomas.
“If we can figure out how to play flawless lacrosse for 48 minutes, we will be successful this season,” Sepeta said.
On the girls side, head coach Meghan Carr and the Lady Knights were 8-8 last season, gaining the 12th seed in the CIF playoffs.
Bishop’s lost four-year varsity starter Susanah Hoehn to graduation but will look to seniors Riley Sexton (midfield/All-League selection last year), Daryl Griglak (midfield/All-League selection last year), Claire Halter, Nicole Ballon-Landa, Chelsea Allen and Kate Bell to lead the way. Junior Jacqueline Rhodes will help lead the defense as well as pull some draws in the center with her strength, according to Carr.
“We will need to come out of the gates running this year as we adjust to our new school schedule,” Carr said. “Our program has really come together with the leadership and experience of the seven seniors. We will need to concentrate on our league games and pull out key wins against Francis Parker and San Dieguito this year to be contenders for the Coastal League championship.”
At La Jolla Country Day School, the Torreys and head coach Michael Tobey look to rebound from last season’s 1-15 finish.
Key players to watch this time around include seniors Jon Volfson and Collin Tuck, and freshmen Jason McCallum and Mikey Soumekh.
“We are a far improved team over last season due to the addition of some key freshmen, several of whom have four-plus years of lacrosse experience,” Tobey remarked. “That said, we are still an extremely young team (only four upperclassmen) with talented players who are learning how to compete at the varsity level.”
On the girls side, head coach Leslie Hunt and the Lady Torreys also look for improvement in 2007. LJCD finished 1-16 a season ago.
Key players leading the way this season should include Kenna Foltz, Caitlin Bonacci, Tatiana Young and Alyssa Newman.
