La Jolla's live music calendar, Feb. 28-March 13

MUST HEAR The Calder Quartet is by definition a chamber ensemble — two violins, a cello and a viola. While the group is certainly acclaimed for its classical work, what keep things interesting is its work with modern composers, including Terry Riley, as well as their work in the rock arena with such acts as the Airborne Toxic Event. The Calder Quartet will perform two shows at UCSD this week, each showcasing a different side of its music. On March 7 at 8 p.m., at the Conrad Prebys Concert Hall, the musicians will focus on their classical music, with a program that includes Beethoven and Bartok. Then on March 8 at 8 p.m., they will appear at UCSD’s The Loft, performing the work of living composers. Classical music aficionados will love every second of these performances, but anyone looking for new music to investigate will be impressed by this quartet’s instrumental virtuosity.
