La Jolla Pop Warner kicks off football and cheer season

Nothing says back-to-school time quite like football and cheerleading, especially for the often under-stimulated youth on summer break. La Jolla Pop Warner Football & Cheer Association is holding registration for youth ages 5-15 for its 2011 season now through July, with practice beginning Aug. 1 for the Torreys. “Children enrolled in youth sports have a great ability to play at the high school level later on,” said Scott Rosecrans, league president. “Many wait to play football until high school when other players may be so far ahead of them and already know the details of the game — not to mention there are often large weight discrepancies between high school players.” Joining the league is a time commitment of about 80 hours of practice, one scrimmage, nine games, and more if the team advances into the playoffs. But schoolwork is the first priority for these student-athletes, Rosecrans said. The league offers supervised study hall before each practice. The league holds fundraisers throughout the season to help cover operational costs, equipment, uniforms, game officials, insurance, concessions and security, and it is accommodating to participants who may have family vacation plans. La Jolla Pop Warner not only serves the youth of La Jolla, but also the surrounding communities of University City, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, Clairemont, Linda Vista, Bay Park and Sorrento Valley. All practices and home games are held at La Jolla Country Day School, located at 9490 Genesee Ave. In-person registration will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 4, June 18 and July 2 at La Jolla Country Day School. Prices vary depending on the team, and full and partial scholarships are available to those who qualify. Registration forms can also be mailed in or completed online.
