La Jolla impressionistic painter Meiko Anekawa will be exhibiting her work at Mission Fed ArtWalk’s 39th Annual Festival in Little Italy April 29-30.
One of the longest-running fine art festivals in Southern California with artwork from around the world, Anekawa is one of eight featured artists selected from among the 250-plus exhibitors. The weekend-long premier arts and culture event showcases every medium of art including painting, sculpture, glasswork, photography, fine jewelry, and more.
Anekawa is a self-professed joyful artist. “I like to bring happiness to my painting,” she said. “I want the viewer to feel happy when they see one of my paintings.”
Salvador Dali and Paul Klee, along with Japanese artists Jyakuchu Ito and Hokusai Katsushika, are artists Anekawa said have influenced her style.
Of her technique, Anekawa said: “I love transforming natural and organic motifs into vivid colors in my art, creating highly saturated and atypical color schemes. My goal is to create chaotic imagery in a beautiful way.”
The artist, who lived in New York City for 10 years, moved to San Diego in 2015. She talked about what inspires her in her work. “I really love nature, the ocean, botanicals, and animals,” she said adding of animals, “They’re so beautiful and colorful here in San Diego.”
Anekawa said her impressionistic style of painting on acrylic focuses on “expressing nature’s beauty from my own perspective. I find beauty in a lot of different colors, combining contrasty or high-tone colors. When they all come together – there’s a harmony that I feel. I try to inject my feelings and emotions into my paintings. I want the viewers to feel that.”
Asked what advice she’d give aspiring painters, Anekawa replied: “You need to have consistent quality in your artwork, and have an interest in some subject you love. If you have that in your mind, you can create art from that with quality.”
The Mission Fed ArtWalk event will run from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 29, and 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Sunday, April 30. Attendance is free. For more information on ArtWalk and its programs, visit artwalksandiego.org.
