It’s that time again: those who have been anxiously waiting for Thin Mints and Tagalongs need wait no longer. Girl Scouts will go door-to-door on Sunday, Jan. 27 to sell cookies and raise money for troop goals.
The first-grade girls in La Jolla Daisy Troop 3870 want to raise enough money to go to Legoland. Last year they had a Build-A-Bear party and donated a tree to Bird Rock Elementary School.
The sixth-grade girls of La Jolla Cadette Troop 3015 also have a goal: to have a sleepover at the Safari Park. Last year the troop had a sleepover in Sea World’s Shark Encounter exhibit and also donated a tree to Bird Rock Elementary.
By setting goals and crafting business plans, the girls learn practical skills including money management, people skills and ethics. Through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, the girls work together to track their progress, work with adults and split work fairly and efficiently. This year the cookie boxes will feature new designs that show how Girl Scouts learn business and life skills. The boxes include recognitions girls can receive and show pictures of Girl Scouts engaged in a wide range of activities including kayaking, dancing, public speaking and community service. In San Diego, Operation Thin Mint is one community service program that allows customers to donate cookies and send written notes to military troops overseas. Since 2002, local Girl Scouts and San Diegans have donated over two million boxes of cookies to U.S. troops.
