Straight from the La Jolla YMCA Firehouse to the stage of NBC’s hit show “America’s Got Talent” are members of Ooh La La Dance Company’s Cosabellas team, led by owner Susie Nguyen, ranked 15th in the world by ESPN for her salsa dancing. The group was hand-selected to audition in front of judges in Los Angeles after a producer from NBC’s top-rated summer series saw them perform on YouTube earlier this year. Already in its sixth season, the show premieres Tuesday, May 31 at 8 p.m., featuring celebrity judges Howie Mandel, Sharon Osbourne and Piers Morgan, with host Nick Cannon. “It was surreal having them judge us,” said Nguyen, “Interesting since we’re used to seeing them on TV all the time.” Just one out of 40,000 acts auditioning with talents ranging from singing and juggling to magic tricks and contortion, the Cosabellas performed in front of a live audience, where no cell phones or cameras were allowed. The high-energy dance team experienced the standard routine of Hollywood productions — lots of waiting before rushing onto stage. “It was the most exciting feeling being in front of a live studio audience,” said Nguyen. “I cried tears of joy from the huge adrenaline rush. It was my favorite time ever being on stage.” The Cosabellas will be performing their audition piece for the general public on June 11 at the La Jolla YMCA Firehouse during Ooh La La Dance Company’s day of free dance and wellness workshop, beginning at 10 a.m. Their hope is to bring more people into the dance community by exposing them to different forms of dance, educating them on health practices such as proper stretching techniques and explaining how nutrition affects overall quality of life. Workshops teaching various genres of dance from salsa and bachata to hip hop and contemporary ballet will take place throughout the day, as well as a raffle with prizes and free 10-minute massages.
