La Jolla residents Sam and Reena Horowitz were recently recognized by USO (United Service Organization) San Diego at its Gallery of Stars reception, wherein a star was hung in their name to honor them for the support they have shown to USO San Diego and active servicemen and women. The Horowitzes are longtime owners and operators of convalescent hospitals and assisted-living facilities. For the last decade or so, Reena Horowitz has been one of San Diego’s most active philanthropists. She has been on the board of directors of the UCSD Cardiovascular Center and the La Jolla Community Center and is co-founder of the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute’s Fishman Fund. She has been a Charter 100 Woman of the Year and is known as a planner of galas. Founded in 1941, the USO keeps the country’s military connected to family, home and country throughout their service to the nation. USO San Diego is a premier USO chartered center, providing morale and support services and a home away from home for all members of the U.S. Armed Forces and their families. USO San Diego’s annual gala creates awareness for the local organization and supports many of the USO’s free programs and services for active-duty, reserve guard and military families. The star hung in the Horowitzes’ name, is the only star given in recognition for their volunteerism, support and leadership.
