Amid ongoing threats from area brush fires, San Diego schools closed Thursday, May 15. The decision was based on recommendations by the San Diego County Office of Education and the San Diego County Office of Emergency Management. Parents and district staff members are receiving automated telephone messages with information on the closure.
At this time, it is expected that all schools will reopen on Friday. La Jolla and local YMCAs meanwhile offered emergency child care for parents whose work and home schedules were disrupted due to fire and excessive heat.
In La Jolla, the Cliffridge Y facility, at 8355 Cliffridge Ave., is offering emergency help. In a related development, some blood bank mobile drives have been redirected or canceled because of fire threats.
As high temperatures continue throughout the state, Governor Brown today secured a Fire Management Assistance Grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to enable the availability of reimbursement for responding local, state and tribal agencies at the Poinsettia Fire burning in San Diego County. So far, the fire has consumed at least 100 acres, destroyed or damaged multiple structures and prompted the issuance of mandatory evacuation orders.
