The Bishop’s School boys volleyball team saw action recently in the Beach Cities Invitational in La Jolla.
Bishop’s (5-3 entering this week) went 2-1 (defeating Fallbrook 2-0 and Orange Glen 2-1, before losing to eventual tourney champ Silverado (0-2). On day two, Bishop’s lost to both Westview (tourney runner-up), 0-2, and Bonanza, 0-2.
“Though we went 2-3 for the tournament, we saw some talented teams and our level of play improved immensely,” Bishop’s head coach Tod Mattox noted. “We were led by Wheeler Hadden and Ivan Regalado; Wheeler led in kills and Ivan in blocks. Great setting contributions were also made by Chandler Frost and Will Harris.”
On Tuesday, March 21, Bishop’s defeated West Hills 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, and 25-16).
“This was a nice win for us, since West Hills beat us in three games two weeks ago,” Mattox said.
Wheeler led Bishop’s in kills with nine, and senior Brian Laub had an excellent all-around match.
“The return of senior Nick Lake has also helped us,” Mattox added. “As he rounds into playing shape, we will become a formidable foe in the competitive Coastal Conference.”
At neighboring La Jolla High, the Vikings have been battling the illness and injury bug as the early season unfolds.
According to La Jolla head coach Dave Jones, “So far we’re using the JVs (junior varsity players) as opposed to forfeiting, but if many more go down, we may have to start forfeiting matches.”
