Killer' Film Arriving

The sport of surfing has become a real family affair these days, and an upcoming event at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego’s (MCASD) Sherwood Auditorium, 700 Prospect St., plans to ride that wave of fun.
“San Diego Surf Cinema,” a new venue produced by One Drop Entertainment, will screen the highly acclaimed surf movie “The Kill 7,” featuring some of the hottest surfers on the planet at numerous world-class wave destinations, on Thursday, April 13, at 8 p.m.
The movie, the last of a series of “The Kill” films, was produced by Josh Pomer of Santa Barbara and is an action-packed eye-opener with ãber-talents, such as seven-time world pro surfing champion Kelly Slater and former champ Andy Irons, along with Bobby Martinez, Tom Curren, Taj Burrows and Jason “Ratboy” Collins, just to name a few prominent stars. Pomer filmed at epic locations in Tahiti, Peru, South Africa, Mexico, Hawaii and Australia, along with slash-happy days in California. The film, however, is only part of the evening’s entertainment.
The local progressive rock band Superunloader will perform live on stage before the movie starts. The popular group has produced several albums and won the San Diego Music Awards’ Best Rock Album honors in 1995.
Raffle prizes and giveaways donated by sponsors, such as Sector 9, Wahoo’s Fish Tacos, SurfShot and Surfer Magazines and GromMom Apparel, will also be part of the fun.
“Our hope is to create an all-age surfing-related event, regularly scheduled, that will be a great place to hang out, socialize and be entertained,” said Jason Donlon, owner of One Drop Entertainment. “We want to make it a venue for local San Diego surf filmmakers as well.”
Recalling the days before video and CDs, when touring surf movies were a well-attended festive happening, Donlon said, “We would like to bring back that atmosphere, that instant stoke of the whole experience. The plan is to tap into that and have a platform for it.”
As a young father, he noted the importance of showing kids the roots of modern surfing as well.
“It would be fun to bring back some of the older, classic surf films as well, to show the folks where we’ve come from,” he said. “We want to make it a family event from 5- to-55-year-olds and more!”
The MCASD box office opens at 6 p.m. and doors will open for the “San Diego Surf Cinema” event and showing of “The Kill 7” at 7:15 p.m. Advance tickets are $8.50 and may be purchased online at www.OneDropEntertainment.com.
