Ken Whalen Surf Challenge for beginners in Mission Beach

The fifth annual Ken Whalen Surf Challenge is a free surf event for beginning and first-time surfers ages 6-16, including surfers with physical challenges needing adaptive surf equipment. Multiple simultaneous heats allow up to 250 total surfers to show off their skills during the event held 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22 near San Fernando Court in Mission Beach. All participants will take part in one 15-minute heat (no advancing). Experienced local high school and college-aged surfers volunteer to assist participants in the water as needed. For family members observing the heats, great music and beach games make it a fun event for all. This event honors local Mission Beach surfer and family man, Ken Whalen, who suffered a fatal stroke at 48 years old. Whalen grew up surfing all the local beaches and traveled the world to enjoy other amazing surf spots. Physically challenged athletes who participated alongside Whalen in triathlons inspired him. This led to his involvement with Challenged Athletes Foundation, which now in turn provides adaptive surf equipment for challenged surfers at this annual event. “We look forward to this day every year,” says event organizer Paula Whalen. “I think the key to success with the new surfers is to have fun with it. When Ken knew someone was having a bad day, he used to say ‘save it for the water.’ It always calmed and inspired him. “His passion for teaching kids and adults to surf brought him great joy. Once they took the first wave, they were hooked. Come enjoy with us, your wave is waiting!” Surf rucksacks with T-shirts, hats and other goodies are provided for all participants, along with awards and prizes for all surfers. Complimentary food will be served. Apparel available for purchase at event, with all proceeds benefitting Challenged Athletes Foundation. Registration is required at kenwhalensurfchallenge.com. Sponsors to date include Hurley, Better Buzz Coffee and Aaron Wealth.
