June Events

Dates: Thursdays, June 1, 8, 15, 22 and 29, 2023
Time: 10:30 a.m.
Title: Toddler and Preschool Storytime
Description: Recommended for ages 2-5, this storytime program includes books, songs, games, and early literacy fun!
Audience: Children

Date: Saturday, June 3, 2023
Time: 2 – 4:30 p.m. p.m.
Title: All Girls STEM presents:  A Rube Goldberg Workshop!
Location: Community Room
Description:  All Girls STEM Society is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that strives to ameliorate the underrepresentation of women in STEM fields by encouraging the future generation. They inspire young girls in grades 3-8 to pursue their interests in STEM fields through free events and workshops.  In June, explore the inventiveness of Rube Goldberg!  Pre-registration is required.  Visit sandiego.librarymarket.com for more information.  
Audience: This workshop is recommended for kids in grades 3 through 8.

Date:  Tuesdays, June 6, 13, 20 and 27, 2023
Time:  4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Title:  Chess Club
Have you always wanted to learn how to play chess or improve your skills? If you have never played before, or are just looking for someone to practice with, join us for some friendly competition!  All supplies are provided. 
Audience:  Recommended for elementary school-aged children through adults.

Date:  Saturday, June 10, 2023
Time:  2:00 p.m.
Title:  Summer Reading Program Event:  Noteworthy Puppets presents A Puppet Musical!
Join us for an incredible puppet musical from Noteworthy Puppets starring The Three Little Pigs! You’ll enjoy an entertaining show full of music and adventure, perfect for ages 3-10! No registration is required. Thanks to the Friends of the Mission Valley Library for their financial support of this program.
Audience: Recommended for ages 3-10.

Date:  Tuesday, June 13 and 27, 2023
Time:  11:30 a.m.
Title:  Learn to Weave!  For Kids and Teens
Learn how to weave with an expert textile artist and develop your art and math skills!  This class is targeted to homeschooling youth ages 10+. No prior experience is required, and all materials will be provided.  Registration is required!  Visit sandiego.librarymarket.com for more information.

Time:  1:00 p.m.
Title:  Oasis Presents:  The Mysterious Death of Meriwether Lewis

Description: Meriwether Lewis, commander of the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition that explored the newly purchased Louisiana Territory from 1803-06, returned home from this perilous journey with every hope (as well as his country’s expectations) of a bright and productive future. Yet within three years, the 35- year-old Lewis was dead in a lonely inn along the Natchez Trace in rural Tennessee, the victim of two gunshots. This lecture by Drs. Dave and Marti Peck, based on their new book of the same title, will help shed light on the mysterious historical fate of this American icon.  This event is free and open to the public, and there is no need to pre-register. 

Audience:  Recommended for adults.

Time:  2:00 p.m.
Title:  Major Morris Photography Opening Reception
As a photographer in the 1960s, Major Morris (1921-2016) captured scenes of inner-city life and protest marches. After the Civil Rights era, he earned a master’s degree from Harvard University and became an educator, training teachers in diversity and cultural sensitivity and working as a university affirmative action officer.
Audience: This event is recommended for adults.  Children are welcome!

Time:  11:30 a.m.
Title:  Mission Valley Friends of the Library Monthly Meeting
Come learn about how the Mission Valley Friends of the Library support our mission!  This meeting is both in-person and on Zoom.  If you would like a Zoom link so that you can participate, please email [email protected].
Audience: This event is recommended for adults.  Children are welcome!

Date: Friday, June 30, 2023
Time: 11:30 a.m.
Title: All Girls STEM and Clueless FTC present:  Astro Camp® Embark on a Mission to Mars!
Location: Community Room
Description:  Astro Camp® is a one-day program led by coaches from the Clueless First Tech Challenge (FTC) and All Girls STEM Society. Geared for kids in grades 3-8, participants will conduct various interactive, educational activities to delve into the science behind NASA’s Mars Rover mission.  Registration is required, at https://www.thecluelessftc.org/outreach/nasa-astro-camp.
Audience: 
This workshop is recommended for kids in grades 3 through 8.
