ITALIAN?ACCENTS: Tuo Sogno showcases Bisazza glass tile mosaics

Although Tuo Sogno officially opens its doors today, May 14, at 7661 Girard Ave., tile designers quietly moved into La Jolla’s design district over the past few weeks, catering to commercial and residential clientele. The store distributes some of the most finely crafted, hand-placed Italian glass tile mosaics from Italy’s Bisazza family. And slabs of semi-precious stones such as quartz and agate — which the dealer claims might cause beneficial side effects, from calming to healing — line the La Jolla showroom. “As far as tiles, Bisazza has been manufacturing glass [mosaics] since the ’50s in the Vincenza area,” said Terence C. Foster, Tuo Sogno’s business development manager. “Everything’s still manufactured there.” The Bisazza family retains control over their designs, which they consider artwork, Foster said. Customers may order designs from catalogs, but any alterations including colors must get approval from the Italian designers. Although the Italian family designs murals using computers, workers must place each colored tile by hand, Foster said. “Bisazza is world-renowned,” Foster said, adding that Italian artisans used 24-karat white and yellow gold tiles in some murals lining the showroom. “We looked for many months to find the right location.” Along with location, Foster said he searched for a showroom that would fit the mosaic modules. In addition to Italian mosaics, Tuo Sogno offers the newest composite slabs of semi-precious stones. From brown agate to tiger’s eye and quartz crystals, clients can utilize these materials in place of marble slab countertops or backlight pieces, creating wall art, Foster said. Concetto creates the composite slabs from quarried stone in myriad colors, Foster said. For information about Tuo Sogno, call (858) 459-4123, or visit www.tuosogno.com.
