Influx of traffic cops nothing big, police say

The past couple of weeks San Diego Police Department (SDPD) traffic officers have been more visible around Pacific Beach, seemingly sitting at every other four-way stop. But according to SDPD officials, the visibly-increased enforcement is nothing special. “Our Traffic Division routinely does have officers out working all of our divisions month-to-month,” said SDPD Northern Division Captain Chris Ball. “I’m not aware of anything out of the ordinary that Traffic Division is doing in Northern Division.” According to Captain Mary Cornicelli with SDPD Traffic Division, the staffing in the Pacific Beach area has remained the same. Cornicelli said one squad, made up of one sergeant and at least five officers, works the Northern Division. “I have a motor squad that’s assigned to the Northern Division out there,” Cornicelli said. “But they patrol the entire division.” Though Cornicelli said that no information for increased patrols in Pacific Beach has come through her office, she did mention that it is typical for traffic enforcement to be beefed-up in response to a complaint. Traffic complaints can come from the public, the City Council or internally from a police officer. “Somebody has complained or they’re asking for increased enforcement or they’ve gone through the council office to ask for increased enforcement based on what’s going on there in the community,” Cornicelli said. “That’s very common and probably where it’s coming from.” As for how long this increased enforcement will last, Cornicelli said it depends on where the complaint is being generated from and the type of complaint it is. “If it’s a patrol officer, they can give more specific information,” Cornicelli said. “We get hundreds and hundreds of speed complaints in the city and the motor officers get out there when they can.”
