Local Realtor honored for effort to fight kids’ cancer
Rosamaria Acuãa, of Prudential California Realty’s Point Loma office, was honored Sept. 14 during the San Diego Association of Realtors Member Appreciation Day. The event was created to recognize association members who volunteer their time to serve the community. Acuãa was selected from a pool of more than 12,500 SDAR members to receive this year’s honor.
Acuãa was also honored with the National Association of Realtors’ Good Neighbor Award in recognition of her volunteer work for the Friends of Scott Foundation (FSF). Founded in memory of Scott Delgadillo, FSF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping children with cancer and their families by providing emotional and financial support.
Contributing to the fight against children’s cancer, Acuãa has used her marketing and networking skills to raise awareness and host fund-raising events. She said she enjoys working directly with the children and their families through a weekly reading program at Children’s Hospital.
With her two teenage daughters, Acuãa helps by cooking meals at the Ronald McDonald House, along with a pajama drive, holiday events and a teen prom in the spring.
Today, Nov. 1, Acuãa will be sponsoring a Dia de los Muertos (Mexican Day of the Dead) event at Casa Guadalajara in Old Town, from 5:30 to 8:00 p.m. The $25 entry fee, which benefits the Friends of Scott Foundation, will include Mexican mariachi music, Folklorico ballet dancing, appetizers and tequila tasting from Tequila los Abuelos-Fortalez. Discovery Shop to host annual holiday boutique
The Point Loma Discovery Shop will hold its 10th annual Holiday Boutique to raise money for the fight against cancer.
The event will take place at the Point Loma Discovery Shop on Midway Drive on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 4 from noon to 4 p.m.
There are 40 Discovery Shops throughout California that are owned and operated by the American Cancer Society. The shops are resale boutiques similar to thrift stores that only take upscale items, according to Mary Wendt, media relations manager for the American Cancer Society.
The shop has been saving holiday-related items all year for the event. Customers can expect low prices on high-end holiday decorations and clothes that are in good condition, Wendt said.
The Point Loma Discovery Shop often receives donations from women who purchase spring lines from Paris and don’t need the clothing the following season. The shop recently received almost-new shoes valued at $350 that sell for $17, according to Wendt.
The shops throughout California boast more than 2,000 volunteers who are cancer survivors or have a spouse who is a cancer survivor.
“Any questions you have about cancer, they probably would be able to answer,” Wendt said.
