Wednesday, Sept. 15, 6 to 8 p.m, the Hervey/Point Loma Branch Library hosts its seventh anniversary event, combining a historical review of the local branch and an overview of the San Diego library system, along with an explanation of efforts to build the Central Library downtown and how the system will benefit residents. The event takes place at the Point Loma site, 3701 Voltaire St. For more information, call (619) 531-1537. Thursday, Sept. 16, 7 p.m., regular meeting of the Ocean Beach Historical Society featuring Richard Carrico, who will speak on “Archaeology at Presidio de San Diego: Who is buried at Presidio Park?” Carrico teaches at the San Diego State University Department of American Indian Studies and Recuerdos Research. Carrico is expected to speak on his extensive research and writing about local history and Indian cultures, mixing intrigue with historical events. Saturday, Sept. 18, 1 to 3 p.m., Friends of Famosa Slough host a free nature walk with good views of a variety of birds and salt marsh habitat. Participants are encouraged to bring binoculars and meet at the first bench on Famosa Boulevard south of the intersection with W. Point Loma Boulevard. Monday, Sept. 20, 5 to 8 p.m., Souplantation hosts a “funraiser” to raise proceeds for the Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programs of San Diego Unified School District. The Point Loma Souplantation location, at 3960 West Point Loma Blvd., will participate. Fifteen percent of the proceeds from the event will be donated to the program. Additional GATE fundraisers are planned at the same location at the same times on Thursday, Sept. 23; Monday, Sept. 27; and Thursday, Sept. 30. For more information, call (619) 222-7404. Thursday, Sept. 23, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., League of Women Voters of San Diego hosts a luncheon titled “Redistricting: The Good, The Bad and the Ugly,” featuring several high-profile speakers in a panel forum about the effects of redistricting at the city, county, state and national levels. Panelists include San Diego City Clerk Elizabeth Maland; former City Attorney Michael Aguirre, who will address city and county redistricting models; Vladamir Kogan of UCSD, who will speak on the Citizens’ Redistricting Committee created by Prop 11 and the Nov. 2 ballot challenge of Prop 27; and Kathay Fong, executive director of California Common Cause, who co-authored and help win passage of Prop 11 to reform state redistricting. The cost of the event is $22 for league members and $27 for nonmembers. The event takes place at Tom Ham’s Lighthouse Restaurant, 2150 Harbor Island Drive. Thursday, Sept. 23, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., free RecruitMilitary Opportunity Expo, expected to attract more than 300 veterans for potential hiring opportunities with national, regional and local employers. The event provides help for returning troops and other veterans and servicemembers and their spouses in finding employment, entrepreneurship and educational opportunities. It is is co-produced by The American Legion, Purple Heart Services; and the Military Spouse Corporate Career Network.
