Shackelford named to dean’s list at Stephens
Amy Shackelford, a graduate of Point Loma High School, has been named to the first-semester high-honors dean’s list for the 2007-08 academic year at Stephens College in Missouri.
Shackelford is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Shackelford. She is a junior theater arts major at Stephens College.
The honor is awarded to students who attain high honors by finishing at least the equivalent of four full classes, or 12 hours, and who achieve a grade-point average of 3.8 or better.
Stephens College, established in 1833, is historically committed to meeting the changing needs of women by engaging students in innovative educational experiences focused on pre-professional fields and the performing arts.
Point Loman elected to board of directors
Point Loma resident Neb Keeton, sales manager with Horizon Distributors, Inc., a distributor of landscape and irrigation products, has been elected to the 2008 board of directors of the California Landscape Contractors Association, according to Craig Mohns, CLCA-San Diego chapter president.
Mohns said Keeton will assist the chapter with coordinating educational seminars on new irrigation equipment and the annual golf tournament and awards program, along with membership issues.
Keeton has a bachelor’s degree in business marketing from the University of Phoenix. He joined the Chandler, Ariz.,-based Horizon company in 1995 and relocated to San Diego in 2004. As sales manager for Horizon’s Southern California and Las Vegas territory, he oversees sales at three stores in Las Vegas and six Southern California locales. He was promoted to his current position in January 2007.
Presbyterian Church to host Weekend on the World
Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church is extending an invitation for community members to participate in the church’s Weekend on the World (WOW) on Saturday, Feb. 9 and Sunday, Feb. 10.
The annual WOW weekend, set to take place at the church, 2128 Chatsworth Blvd., is an opportunity to hear world-renowned speakers from the missionary field.
This year, PLCPC’s Mission Committee has lined up guest speaker Rev. Dr. Scott Sunquist, an associate professor of World Mission and Evangelism at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, where he is also the founder of the World Mission Initiative.
Sunquist has spent time as both a pastor and lecturer in Singapore. His extensive background in world mission in his years in Singapore and author of several noted resource volumes ” including”Dictionary of Asian Christianity” ” has earned Sunquist the title of the “Kenneth Scott Latourette of our time.”
“The WOW weekend is our committee’s opportunity to educate our congregation and the Point Loma community on worldwide missionary activities,” said Alex H. Jewell, member of the PLCPC board of elders and chair of the Mission Committee. “This weekend is also an important step to energize our congregation to make PLCPC a missional church, a church working to deliver Christian values outside the walls of the church building.”
Scheduled events include:
n Saturday, Feb. 9, 8:30 a.m. to noon, Family Life Center, Sunquist will discuss the role of mission in an evolving world and contemplate the future of missions within the Presbyterian Church. The Saturday-morning lecture is free.
n Sunday, Feb. 10, 8:30 a.m. and 10:15 a.m., church services. Sunquist will preach on “Many Languages, One Lamb, No Tears.”
n Sunday, Feb. 10, 11:30 a.m., Family Life Center. Brunch follows the second service, where Sunquist will speak and entertain a question-and-answer period. The cost is $8 per person or $20 per family.

Point Loma Rotary Club hosts state senator
State Sen. Christine Kehoe was recently the guest of the Point Loma Rotary Club during a weekly meeting held Jan. 25.
Kehoe spoke to Rotary Club members about the current state budget crisis, her involvement in the reorganization of the San Diego Airport Authority and several environmental topics that included water and energy conservation.
To illustrate her point, Kehoe spoke of a recent tour of a housing development in North County that used innovative architecture and technology for energy conservation, solar power, rain water run-off control and building material recycling.
Kehoe told club members that she envisions California leading the world in development of green technologies and environmentally friendly development. The senator also fielded audience questions regarding the Feb. 5 ballot initiatives and other constituent concerns.
Kehoe represented District 3 of the San Diego City Council from 1993 to 2000 and District 76 in the state Assembly from 2000 to 2004.
After being elected to the state Senate in 2004 to represent the 39th District, Kehoe now chairs the state Senate’s Energy, Utilities and Communications Committee. She is also a member of the Senate Committee on Budget and Fiscal Review, Natural Resources and Water, Transportation and Housing, Local Government, the Governor’s Broadband Task Force, the California Cultural and Historical Endowment and the Sea Grant Advisory Panel.
Kehoe similarly serves on the Select Committees on Defense and Aerospace Industry, the Natural Resources and Water’s Subcommittee on Delta Resources, the Joint Committee on the Arts and the Select Committee on Coastal Protection and Watershed Conservation.

Beoga slated for Holy Trinity concert series
The Holy Trinity Parish in Ocean Beach will soon host the Ireland-based band Beoga in its upcoming Holy Trinity concert series to be held at the church.
Beoga, a five-piece traditional band from County Antrim, boasts a unique sound featuring the twin dueling accordions of Sean Og Graham and Damian McKee, along with the four-time All-Ireland bodhran champion Eamon Murray and pianist Liam Bradley and new addition Niamh Dunne.
The band primarily plays traditional music but also incorporates other genres’ nuances with bluesy-riffs jazz and a New Orleans jamboree vibe.
The concert takes place Sunday, March 2 at 7:30 p.m. at the parish, 2083 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. Tickets are $20 in advance and $22 at the door.

Eastern Star to host
luncheon, bazaar
Members of Point Loma Eastern Star No. 490 will host an annual luncheon and bazaar on Saturday, Feb. 9 ” an event complete with lunch, entertainment and a shopping opportunity for bargain hunters.
The event, themed “Love of Eastern Star,” will begin at 11 a.m. at 1711 Sunset Cliffs Blvd.
A chicken salad lunch will be served as bargain hunters take advantage of everything from baked goods to household items, arts and crafts and unique gift ideas.
Eastern Star is an international fraternal organization dedicated to servicing both members and the community. The organization is dedicated to servicing humanity and hosts many social activities with one another.
The Point Loma chapter meets in Ocean Beach at 1711 Sunset Cliffs Blvd. on Mondays, with social events in between.
