Local student in running for national award
Jeffrey Kosmo, a St. Augustine High School senior, has been nominated to compete in the national Principal’s Leadership Award (PLA) scholarship program, sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
James Horne, principal at St. Augustine High School, today announced the nomination, which places Kosmo in the national competition. One hundred national PLA winners will be chosen this spring to receive a college scholarship ranging from $1,000 to $12,000.
“Jeffrey is the perfect nominee to represent excellence in leadership at Saints. He is unselfish with his time and talents and is regularly focused on the needs of others,” Horne said.
High school principals from across the country were able to nominate one of their student leaders.
Nominees were selected based on their leadership skills, participation in service organizations and clubs, achievements in the arts and sciences, employment experience and academic record. They were also required to write an essay.
“Every year the nominees for the Principal’s Leadership Awards are just phenomenal, and Jeffrey is no different,” said Gerald N. Tirozzi, executive director, NASSP. “He is an excellent example of what a true student leader embodies and deserves to be commended for his excellence in the classroom and community.”
In recognizing leadership in co-curricular activities as well as academic performance, the PLA scholarship recognizes the importance of a well-rounded education. Co-curricular activities are an essential part of the school curriculum.
While at Saints, Jeffrey has been a leader in the Associated Student Body council, a valuable member of the Campus Ministry leadership team and a National Merit Scholarship commended scholar.
All of these things are the makings of a well-rounded student.
This fall he hopes to attend the college of his choice. Jeff has made application to many fine universities including, Notre Dame, Georgetown, Villanova and the University of Southern California.
Jeffrey is the son of Fred and Tricia Kosmo. The family resides in the Pt. Loma neighborhood of San Diego.
