The Unified Port of San Diego has begun a three-month-long repaving project along a stretch of Shelter Island Drive starting from the Silver Gate Yacht Club, 2091 Shelter Island Drive, to the Harbor Police station at 1401 Shelter Island Drive, according to port officials.
Work began Monday, Jan. 14 and crews will continue the effort through Friday, April 4, said Marguerite Elicone, spokesperson for the Port of San Diego.
“We’ve been wanting to do it for some time. After a while, the roads start getting rough and bumpy,” she said.
The construction will occur in three phases. Crews will work on a different section of road during each phase. Although traffic will be impeded during construction, one lane in each direction will be open.
Elicone said crews will try to minimize the impact on traffic flow, but the actual impact is unknown.
“No parking” signs will be posted during construction. A public parking lot across from the Silver Gate Yacht Club will also be closed to allow room for work trucks, she said.
Crews are scheduled to work Mondays through Fridays unless otherwise needed, she said.
The $886,250 project awarded to Hazard Construction Co. is part of the port’s maintenance program. The port uses its estimated $14 million maintenance budget allotted for fiscal year 2008 for maintenance projects throughout the port tidelands, she said.
Projects include street repairs within the port’s jurisdiction, shoreline maintenance and water-pump replacement projects, Elicone said. For more information, visit www.portofsandiego.org.
