At least 500 volunteers will descend on Point Loma on Saturday, June 1 to launch an aggressive cleanup of 35 community project sites as part of the third annual Day of Service event organized each year by the Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church. Participants, including District 2 City Councilman Kevin Faulconer and District 5 City Councilwoman Lorie Zapf will gather at 8:15 for a continental breakfast at the Family Life Center, 2128 Chatsworth Blvd., before setting off to toil from 9 a.m. to noon. A complimentary barbeque lunch will be served at the same location after the mission is complete, and volunteers will be given T-shirts for the cleanup event. The Day of Service includes a variety of projects and skills so all ages can participate. Volunteers are still needed to aid the ambitious effort. Among the key projects are hillside stabilization and arena improvements at the Peninsula YMCA, filling gopher holes at Robb Field, painting the back side of the gym at Point Loma High, trail work at Cabrillo National Monument, preparing food for the homeless, clean up of the San Diego River at Dog Beach, weeding the Rose Garden at Liberty Station NTC Park and elementary school improvements. Additional projects include trash removal at Famosa Slough, graffiti removal, writing letter and cards to soldiers, singing to seniors, youth hostel improvements, prayer quilt ministry and help to the Presbyterian Urban Ministries and San Diego Food Bank. “This is an opportunity for volunteers from throughout our neighborhood to work together to enrich our community by helping our schools, our environment, our military and our neighbors in need,” said event co-chairman and former City Councilman Byron Wear. Many volunteers, including students, Y members, veterans, Scout groups, community volunteers and civic leaders plan to participate and more help is needed. “The Day of Service has been a highlight for our church and it’s given us the opportunity to collectively put our faith into action,” said Karla Shaw, associate pastor of the Point Loma Presbyterian Church To volunteer for the Day of Service event, call (619) 326-8894, email [email protected] or show up at the church at 8:15 a.m. on June 1 for an assignment. On Sunday, June 2, the church will have a special celebration at the 8:30 and 10:15 a.m. services with Dr. Dean Nelson, director of the journalism program at Point Loma Nazarene University, who will speak on preaching on community service. The Point Loma Community Presbyterian Church celebrated its 75th year in 2012 with a renovation of the church sanctuary and new courtyard and plans are under way for a renovation of the church preschool and youth facilities in 2014.
