The New Americans Museum will present NAM Talks: From the Field to the Shelves, part of its Becoming All-American series promoting dialogue about diversity in baseball, on Saturday, June 6 from noon to 2 p.m. at Liberty Station in Point Loma.
Peter Miesner, manager of the Sullivan Family Baseball Research Center at the San Diego Central Library, along with Daniel Boyle and Andy Strasberg, baseball historians and members of the Society for American Baseball Research, are featured speakers.
The speakers will also touch on a recent acquisition by the San Diego Public Library. In conjunction with the San Diego Ted Williams Chapter of the Society for American Baseball Research, the library has acquired the William J. Weiss Collection of baseball history, which comprises 15 tons of baseball-related material. It will be housed in the Sullivan Family Baseball Research Center, located on the eighth floor of the San Diego Central Library.
Becoming All-American features a timeline tracing diversity throughout baseball history and a special “pop-up” traveling exhibition, Milestones in Hispanic Baseball History, on loan from the Hispanic Heritage Baseball Museum Hall of Fame. It includes a display of baseball stars of Hispanic descent, featuring rare memorabilia from some of America’s favorite diverse and record-breaking players such as Fernando Valenzuela, Roberto Clemente and San Diego’s Ted Williams. It also includes From the South Bay to the World Series, an installation celebrating Chula Vista’s Parkview Elementary School team and its 2009 Little League World Series championship.
Becoming All-American is on display at The New Americans Museum, NTC/Liberty Station, 2825 Dewey Road, and will be on view through July 5. Hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays through Fridays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
