Hip hop meets art meets Rock Paper Scissors

Art, music, fashion and dance are the main elements of hip hop, point driven home by an exhibit at Ocean Beach’s Rock Paper Scissors International Galleria. “The Heist,” a hip-hop infused art and fashion show, will take place Friday, Sept. 29, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
The event “” part of the galleria’s monthly art show series, “Works From the Vault” “” will be held inside the building’s old bank vault (a remnant of the building’s past life as a Bank of America branch) and will feature works from local artists Sake, Godoyski, Romali and Optic.

According to a press release, the works illustrate a variety of mixed-media techniques and materials, including spray, acrylic and oil paints to create graffiti, abstract designs, comic book characters and captured moments in hip-hop history.
One featured artist, Godoyski, who uses spray painted backgrounds for his self-described “Cumulative Memory Meso-American” works, said he got involved with the event because of the galleria’s expansive space and collection of talent.
“I did a benefit show [at the galleria] not too long ago,” Godoyski said. “I was just stoked when they asked me to be a part of this because I just moved here to San Diego.”
On hand to set the musical vibe, local DJs Tenshun, Jo-ill, Mane l, Existence 76 and Son of Jarel will scratch records as break-dancers perform.
The fashion show will feature hip-hop infused clothing designs from Tribal gear and the Armory, among other clothing companies.
The galleria, located at 4976 Newport Ave., regularly features an eclectic variety of handmade creations by local artists for sale.

˜The Heist’ hopes to reach young people and show them what the world could be: people living together and having fun,” according to a press release.
Admission for the event is free and sushi and wine refreshments will be served. The featured art will also be available for purchase.
